Health is Wealth | Antioxidants Beneficial for Patients with COPD

Health is Wealth | Antioxidants Beneficial for Patients with COPDANTIOXIDANTS BENEFICIAL FOR PATIENTS WITH COPD
Summary: Researchers investigated levels of lipid peroxidation, coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu) in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations. A patient group with COPD acute exacerbation (n=45) and a control group of healthy smokers (n=45) were included in the study. Forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC) were lower in the COPD exacerbation group as compared to the control group. C- reactive protein levels, white blood cell count, and sedimentation rate were significantly (p < 0.001) higher in patients than in controls. CoQ10 levels and the Cu/Zn ratio were significantly lower in patients as compared to controls, although MDA, Cu, and Zn levels were significantly higher in patients than in controls. Negative correlations were found among MDA, Cu, Zn, FEV1, and FVC values in exacerbation and control subjects. Oxidative stress increased during the exacerbation period. These results suggest that various antioxidants, such as coenzyme Q10, may benefit patients with COPD.
