World Cancer Day a time to focus on prevention - Phoenix Women’s Health | Examiner.com

Today is World Cancer Day.

The World Health Organization has recognized Feb. 4 as a day to focus on the fight against cancer.

In Arizona, residents need to be especially vigilant in the fight to prevent skin cancer. Arizona ranks No. 2 in the world (behind Australia) in the incidence of skin cancer. Experts recommend people wear sunscreen and protect their skin throughout the year, not just in the summer. ACS promotes the phrase "Slip, Slop, Slap and Wrap" to help you remember the four key methods you can use to protect yourself from UV radiation:

Slip on a shirt
Slop on sunscreen
Slap on a hat
Wrap on sunglasses to protect the eyes and sensitive skin around them
According to the American Cancer Society, new cancer cases in Arizona in 2010 totaled more than 29,700. The overall costs for cancer in the country came to about $263 billion last year, the organization estimates.

There were more than 4,000 cases of lung cancer diagnosed in 2010 in Arizona. Tobacco use continues to contribute to a large percentage of lung cancer cases. For free smoking cessation guidance in Arizona, go to www.ashline.org. The organization runs a toll-free help line.
